About this event
Democracy Defender Training — Election Protection, Suffolk County Saturday, October 24 · 5:00-7:30PM · Virtual This is people power — something real you can actually do, together, to stand up for our democracy and our communities. A Democracy Defender shows up on Election Day, stands just outside the polling place, and watches, documents, and reports if something isn’t right. No confrontation, no danger, and never alone — we built this to be done together. Here’s why it matters right now: the DOJ is sending roughly 1,000 election monitors to polling sites nationwide this November, and the administration has moved to put ICE near polling places — a fight still playing out in court. Long Island isn’t the top target, but trainers are calling it a real risk this cycle, not the highest, but not nothing. We’re not waiting around to see what happens. We’ve partnered with NYCLU, Common Cause NY, and Battleground NY on a training built specifically for the eastern Suffolk County — the first of its kind in Suffolk County. Nothing like this has ever been done here before. Be part of history, on the right side of it. This training is required before you can sign up for a shift. You’ll learn:
— Your rights, and voters’ rights, at the polls in New York
— How to document and report calmly, without confrontation
— How to help a confused or worried voter
— Who to call the moment something needs to be escalated After training, claim 2.5-hour shifts, as many as you want, at locations across eastern Suffolk County — close to home when we can, with our most vulnerable communities prioritized first. Bring a friend. This is people power — the more of us, the more ground we cover, and the more it proves none of this is inevitable. Be part of it. A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
