Our DC area unions are not only doing electoral work, but also making plans to be vigilant until January 2 and 3 when our local and national representatives begin governing. We are focused on winning political power for our members and their families just as in past years, but we are also taking steps to make sure that the people we cast ballots for are sworn in and able to govern despite verbal attacks on them, and to protect our members and our unions from politically-motivated attacks. With the military occupation of DC, attacks on Black voting rights, unprecedented redistricting and efforts to disenfranchise millions who mail ballots, it is clear that Trump is intent on subverting our democracy. We will be part of a broad movement to stop him. Our unions together with Free DC will be hosting a half-day Election Protection strategy convening and training-of-trainers the afternoon of Sunday October 25 on zoom. Who is invited? · Union leaders, political staff, or organizing staff responsible for internal member-to-member organizing. · Non-political/organizing staff who are particularly interested in election enforcement and solidarity work · Rank-and-file leaders who could be deployed to assist in election enforcement, and/or organize others to engage. · IU staff who might be deployed to work in the local DC context in case of election enforcement need or an even larger surge of federal law enforcement, whether HSI, DEA, FBI, ICE, or other actors.
