Join us for a morning of stewardship volunteering at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens! Help us protect the trees of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens from the busy beavers. As beaver activity increases this fall, volunteers will cut lengths of welded-wire fencing to size for approximately 252 trees near the ponds, pools, and wetland boardwalk. Each piece will be wrapped around a tree trunk and secured to form a sturdy circular barrier, shielding the bark from gnawing and damage. This hands-on project directly safeguards the park's beloved tree canopy, cultural integrity, and public viewshed that makes Kenilworth so special. Free registration, open to groups and individuals. Space is limited for this event and pre-registration is required. Participate in a morning of park stewardship by taking on litter collection around the park. All tools will be provided. This event will run rain or shine—please dress accordingly and plan to work outside! The park is accessible by car and there is a large visitor parking lot available for use. By Metro, the park entrance is 1.0 mile from the Deanwood Metro Station and 1.3 miles from the Minnesota Ave Station, both on the Orange Line. By foot or bike, access the park via the Anacostia River Trail. We'll provide all necessary tools and supplies. We recommend you bring a water bottle, snack, hat, bag/backpack, a change of clothes, and sun protection. Please wear clothes and shoes you aren't afraid to get wet or muddy and dress according to the weather. We recommend that you do not wear jewelry. We encourage families and students to join us. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone, parent or guardian. This event is eligible for Student Service Learning hours (SSL).
