About this event
What to expect New to canvassing? That’s completely okay! No experience is required, and we’ll start every shift with a short training so everyone feels prepared before heading to the doors. We’ll meet together at the Community First Whatcom office, go over the basics of the conversation, show everyone how to record who they spoke with at the door, and get paired up before heading out to canvass in the community. For your first shift, you can shadow an experienced canvasser so you can hear how they talk with folks at the door and get comfortable before jumping into conversations yourself. Most of the shift will be spent walking through a neighborhood and having short conversations with voters. You do not need to memorize a script or be an expert. We’ll provide the information, materials, and support you need. Please bring: A fully charged smartphone
Comfortable walking shoes
Weather-appropriate clothing
Water and anything else you may need while walking Additional details, resources, talking points, MiniVAN instructions, and arrival information will be sent after signup so you have everything you need to feel prepared for your shift. Why door knocking matters Most of us have had an election where the ballot showed up and we realized we hadn’t researched everything on it yet, or where voting almost slipped our minds altogether. One of the most effective ways to help people participate is simply reaching them before their ballot arrives, having a one-on-one conversation, and making sure they know what is on the ballot and why it matters. Those conversations can make a real difference. Here in Whatcom County, the 2026 primary for the 42nd Legislative District Senate race came down to just four votes between two candidates. If knocking on doors sounds intimidating, know that canvassing is typically a really positive experience. We’ll be reaching out to voters who regularly participate in elections and having short, friendly conversations with people in our community. Yo
