About this event
Join us in Birmingham for a Young People's Hearing on Sex Ed in Alabama! This year Alabama Senate Bill 209 to mandate Abstinence Only Until Marriage Curriculum in all K-12 public schools and removing ANY sex ed from being taught K-4 passed. We, our young people, and our organizational partners mounted a 3-year legislative fight against this bill and it will go into effect on October 1, 2026. We will commune over dinner provided by URGE and start with a quick policy training on how to hold your state legislators accountable to the way they voted on this bill AND we'll have postcards right there :) The goal of this event goes beyond just legislative advocacy and is to create a safe space for our young 18-30 yo BIPOC LGBTQ+ member base to come together and hold their own People's Hearing on sex education in Alabama and share how it has shaped/does shape their lives. We'll close out with a relational organizing training by our State Organizer to discuss how we take the power we built back into our communities. For admission to the event, we are asking folks to bring menstrual products to support Yellowhammer Fund's community care work. No one will be turned away if they don't have a donation. Preferred products are Honey Pot pads & wipes, Playtex, U by Kotex, Cora, L. organic tampons, Monthly period panties. To keep our community safe, you MUST register to attend this event, and we will close registration 24 hours before the event. This event is a collaboration between URGE Alabama, Yellowhammer Fund, & the Alabama Youth Activist Alliance in the Alabama Reproductive Health, Rights, & Justice Coalition
