About this event
Ever wonder how local decisions actually get made? Join the Knox Young Dems Observer Corps. Observer Corps members attend local government meetings, follow what happens in the room, and help report back to the community. Our goal is simple: increase youth presence, public transparency, and accountability in the places where local power actually moves. The Knox County Commission makes decisions every month on land use, housing, healthcare, infrastructure, public safety, education, taxes, and more - decisions that will shape Knox County for years. Right now, the 18-35 demographic is underrepresented in these rooms. We are changing that by showing up, learning the process, and helping our community understand what happened. As an Observer, you do not need to be an expert. KYD will help you know what to look for. Before the meeting, registered observers will receive a short guide, an observer report document to fill out, and the most current agenda available by email. What we do: Attend local County Commission meetings. Observe the meeting’s conduct, major discussion points, public comments, votes, and next steps. Take notes using KYD’s observer report guide. Help KYD report back to the community on issues that affect young people and working families in Knox County. We maintain a neutral, professional presence during meetings. Observers are not required to speak, lobby, or participate in public comment. We simply exercise our right to know what local government is doing and help make sure more people know too.
